Accept Australian values or get out

Hats off for the Aussies!!!

I got this outstanding piece over from Mike's America. (thanks Mike) What a contrast between Mark Steyn's column about how the United Kingdom is handling British Muslims and how Australia is handling the influx of Islam. The Aussies deserve a medal for standing up for what they believe in and the fact that they are actually proud of their country and her people:

EDUCATION Minister Brendan Nelson has bluntly told Islamists who do not want to accept and teach Australian values that they should "clear off".

"We don't care where people come from; we don't mind what religion they've got or what their particular view of the world is. But if you want to be in Australia, if you want to raise your children in Australia, we fully expect those children to be taught and to accept Australian values and beliefs," he said.

"We want them to understand our history and our culture, the extent to which we believe in mateship and giving another person a hand up and a fair go. And basically, if people don't want to be Australians and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well basically they can clear off."

Gosh, a country with a spine. What a concept.

exactly, when non-muslims go over to the middle east to work they are expected to abide by islamist rules and not to insult their modesty by dressing "indecently"? but its ok for their women to blanket themselves with shrouds? did you read the latest about the dutch ruling, Alice?

Yes, I read it. It will be interesting to see how it goes over.

You know while our troops are in Afg. and Iraq, they are not allowed to drink alcohol, and no doubt our women soldiers must abide by the dress code presented there, what happened to what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

now you reminded me about the woman army major[?] who sued the US army and/or the saudi govt for violating her rights to dress or roam freely without the company of men or summat. good on her.

and canada - toronto i think - doesn't help matters by giving legitimacy to the sharia court to run parallel with their judiciary. give em an inch they want, no demand a yard.

Doesn't the sharia court promote violence towards women?

I wonder if the Ozzies (or British immigrants as they originally were) adopted the values of the aborigines - who were there first. Weren't the Ozzies immigrants?

Again the same could be said of the US. Did the US adopt the values of the native americans or did they impose European values?

I know of English and Americans who go to live in countries that do not speak English - and yet they do not learn the native language and do not adopt their values.

I guess it comes down to the old 'don't do as I do - do as I say!'

You forgot the Spanish, Gaffe. And the Moors.

Don't forget to berate the Spanish and the Moors - a few hundred (or several thousand) years too late - but have at it if it makes you feel better.

You might's well berate the mythical King Arthur while you're at it - for all it means.

UGH!!

Now the people who carved out barren land and made a nation should have adopted aboriginal ways?

Why aren't you going down to Stonehenge for the pagan festival Gaffa, if you don't want to be called a hypocrite...

Is it just me or does anyone else think Gaffa is French?

Hmmm... maybe he IS a pagan...

Gaffa, take a breath.

Good point Monicker - there are lots of examples of people moving around the world and taking their culture with them and doing little to adopt to the native culture.

Although it does seem pointless berating King Arthur. If he is mythical and very likely never existed you might as well throw in the Tooth fairy. Nice tangent though.

I am very proud of the European powers over the last few centuries. It was from this continent that there was an explosion in technical innovation, empire building and discovery.

However there are undoubtably things we cannot be proud of which includes slavery and how the Europeans settlers treated the native populations - by pushing them forcably off their lands. You cannot undo a history of invasions and in some ways it can make countries stronger.

My point is - what is English values, American values and Australian values? Sounds a bit vague doesn't it? Is it written down? Does that mean, that when a minority culture comes to live in a country that it has to eat the same food, wear the same clothes, pray at the same church etc.

Personally I think countries should have strong immigration controls based on what skills the person is bringing to the country, can they speak the country's language, ensure they have no criminal record and no association to any terror groups. Ensure they don't have any infectious diseases, have enough money to support themselves and they are willing to obey the laws of the country.

Beyond that - they should dress, eat, pray - how and where they like. They should be entitled to their views and culture heritage. Multiculturism might be a hated word of the right - but the US was built on waves of immigration and some of these signs are still visible today.

I dont disagree with the aussies. But i think there is an element in this blog that goes beyond pointing out what is wrong and starts getting ever so slightly derisory. The same attitude that conversely was used by americans to ridicule the Brits for being too closed off and uptight and for stamping all over other cultures with their deeply terrible imperialist ways. The result of that is this rotten left swing the other way to make amends.

I guess thats why we are all so keen on a change of government. I agree with shadow defense minister Gerald Horwarth who said that British-born fundamentalists should leave and live in Islamic states where they would feel more at home. What gall! Im also rooting for David Davis who warned that multiculturalism has failed and that Muslims should unite behind "common values of nationhood"
