Semper fi: I just had a co-worker return from holiday and doing the canals in England. We went on a canal trip this summer too, it was a first for me and I loved it.
your country Actually, this is not my country, this is my husband's country; I am as much of an American as you are.
"Americanization" of London I don't really know how Americanized London has become since I have been here only two years, and haven't noticed any changes in that time. We don't live in London, but visit occasionally. As far as London being expensive, it's one of the most expensive cities in the world.
the British seem to have turned into an unhappy lot compared to her previous visits Well, I'm not surprised to hear that. The Brits are over taxed; homes are over priced; the population in this country (especially in the south) is staggering; and the country (like ours) has become a true nanny state with the government, not only in the U.K. telling them what to do and how to it and when to do it, but they have some little gnome in Brussels (EU) doing the exact same thing.
distortions and anti-America venom spewing constantly from the BBC. Not only from the BBC and other television stations, but from the print media also. Of course, you have to consider where they get the majority of their feed from...CNN, really what do you expect.
If it is of any consolation, the British media tends to turn on their own countrymen with the same venom as they show Americans if others are not in the same frame of mind as the MSM (main stream media). I tend to not watch their National News anymore, because it has become just tabloid gossip, i.e. Kate Moss and her on again/off again cocaine addiction, or they are spewing their infernal hate-filled garbage towards their military, our military, or our country in general.
Now, I could be all wet in my observations, but you asked.
As for MSM - media bias - check this out...

Seems the media is always bias against what political views the individual criticising the media holds. Funny that.
